Those Who Set The Ranks
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful:
[37:1]
By those who are ranged in ranks

[37:2]
and the drivers who drive [away]

[37:3]
and those who recite by way remembrance.

[37:4]
Indeed your God is certainly One,

[37:5]
Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, and Lord of the sun’s risings.

[37:6]
We have indeed adorned the lowest heaven with an adornment, the stars,

[37:7]
and to guard from every any rebellious devil.

[37:8]
They cannot listen in on the High Council, for they are pelted from every side

[37:9]
to repel [them], and theirs is an everlasting chastisement;

[37:10]
except him who snatches a fragment, and who is then pursued by a piercing flame.

[37:11]
So ask them: Are they stronger as a creation, or those [others] whom We created? Indeed We created them from a viscous clay.

[37:12]
Nay, but you marvel, while they engage in ridicule,

[37:13]
and [even] when they are reminded, they are not mindful,

[37:14]
and when they see a sign, they make it an object of ridicule.

[37:15]
And they say: ‘This is nothing but manifest sorcery.

[37:16]
When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we indeed be resurrected?

[37:17]
And our forefathers too?’

[37:18]
Say: ‘Yes, and you will be utterly humiliated!’

[37:19]
For it will be only a single cry and, lo! they will be watching.

[37:20]
And they will say, ‘O woe to us!’ ‘This is the Day of Retribution’.

[37:21]
‘This is the Day of Judgement that you used to deny!’

[37:22]
‘Gather those who did wrong together with their mates and what they used to worship

[37:23]
besides God and lead them to the path of Hell.

[37:24]
But [first] stop them, for they must be questioned.

[37:25]
“What is wrong with you that you do not help one another?”

[37:26]
Nay, but today they offer complete submission.

[37:27]
And some of them will turn to others, questioning each other.

[37:28]
They will say: ‘Indeed you used to approach us from the right’.

[37:29]
They say: ‘On the contrary! You were [simply] not believers.

[37:30]
And we did not have any warrant over you. Nay, but you [yourselves] were a rebellious folk.

[37:31]
So our Lord’s Words have become due against us. Indeed we shall taste [the doom];

[37:32]
So we led you astray: Indeed we [ourselves] were astray’.

[37:33]
So they on that day will share in the chastisement.

[37:34]
Indeed so We deal with sinners.

[37:35]
For truly it was they who, when it was said to them, ‘There is no god except God’, used to be scornful,

[37:36]
and would say, ‘Are we to abandon our gods for a mad poet?’

[37:37]
Nay, but he has brought [them] the truth and confirmed the [earlier] messengers.

[37:38]
‘You shall certainly taste the painful chastisement,

[37:39]
and you will only be requited what you used to do’,

[37:40]
Except for God’s sincere servants;

[37:41]
For them there will be a distinct provision,

[37:42]
fruits and they will honoured

[37:43]
in the Gardens of Bliss,

[37:44]
[reclining] upon couches, facing one another;

[37:45]
they are served from all round with a cup from a spring,

[37:46]
white, delicious to the drinkers,

[37:47]
wherein there is neither madness, nor will they be spent by it,

[37:48]
and with them will be maidens of restrained glances with beautiful eyes,

[37:49]
as if they were hidden eggs.

[37:50]
Some of them will turn to others, questioning each other.

[37:51]
One of them will say, ‘Indeed I had a comrade,

[37:52]
who used to say, “Are you really among those who affirm as truth,

[37:53]
[that] when we are dead and have become dust and bones, we shall actually be called to account?” ’

[37:54]
He says, ‘Will you have a look?’

[37:55]
Then he will take a look and he will catch sight of him in the centre of Hell.

[37:56]
He will say, ‘By God! You very nearly destroyed me.

[37:57]
And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I [too] would have been of those arraigned’.

[37:58]
Do we then not die [anymore],

[37:59]
aside from our first death, and are we not to be chastised?’

[37:60]
Truly this is indeed the mighty success.

[37:61]
For the like of this let [all] the workers work.

[37:62]
Is that a better hospitality or the Zaqqūm tree.

[37:63]
We have indeed made it a trial for the wrongdoers?’

[37:64]
Indeed it is a tree that comes forth from the very source of Hell.

[37:65]
Its spathes are like the heads of devils.

[37:66]
And indeed they will eat of it, and will fill their bellies from it.

[37:67]
Then, lo!, on top of it they will have a brew of boiling water.

[37:68]
Then indeed their return shall be to Hell-fire.

[37:69]
Lo! they found their fathers to be astray,

[37:70]
and so they are [also now] hurrying in their footsteps.

[37:71]
And verily most of the ancients went astray before them,

[37:72]
and We certainly had sent among them warners.

[37:73]
So behold how was the consequence for them who were warned,

[37:74]
[all] except God’s sincere servants.

[37:75]
And verily Noah called to Us, and how excellent were the Hearers of the prayer.

[37:76]
And We delivered him and his family from the great distress,

[37:77]
and made his descendants the survivors.

[37:78]
And We left for him among posterity:

[37:79]
‘Peace be to Noah among the worlds!’

[37:80]
Thus indeed We requite the virtuous.

[37:81]
He was indeed one of Our faithful servants.

[37:82]
Then We did drown the others.

[37:83]
And truly of his adherents was Abraham.

[37:84]
When he came to his Lord with a heart that was pure,

[37:85]
when he said to his father and his folk, ‘What do you worship?

[37:86]
Is it a calumny — gods other than God — that you desire?

[37:87]
What then is your supposition regarding the Lord of the Worlds?’

[37:88]
And he cast a glance at the stars

[37:89]
and said, ‘Indeed I feel [I will be] sick’.

[37:90]
So they went away, leaving him behind.

[37:91]
Then he turned to their gods and said, ‘Will you not eat?

[37:92]
What is wrong with you that you do not speak?’

[37:93]
He then turned on them striking [them] with his right hand.

[37:94]
So they came running towards him.

[37:95]
He said, ‘Do you worship what you [yourselves] have carved,

[37:96]
when God created you and whatever you make?’

[37:97]
They said, ‘Build for him a structure, then cast him into the fierce fire’.

[37:98]
So they sought to outwit him, but We made them the lowermost.

[37:99]
And he said, ‘I shall indeed depart to my Lord, He will guide me.

[37:100]
My Lord! Grant me of the righteous’.

[37:101]
So We gave him the good tidings of a forbearing son.

[37:102]
And when he was old enough to walk with him, he said, ‘O my dear son, I see in a dream that I shall sacrifice you. So see what you think’. He said, ‘O my father do whatever you have been commanded. You shall find me, God willing, of the steadfast’.

[37:103]
And when they had both submitted, and he had laid him down on his forehead,

[37:104]
We called to him, ‘O Abraham!

[37:105]
Verily you have fulfilled the vision’. So do We reward those who are virtuous.

[37:106]
Truly this was indeed a clear test’.

[37:107]
Then We ransomed him with a mighty sacrifice.

[37:108]
And We left for him among posterity:

[37:109]
‘Peace be to Abraham!’

[37:110]
So do We reward those who are virtuous.

[37:111]
Indeed he is one of Our faithful servants.

[37:112]
And We gave him the good tidings of [the birth of] Isaac a prophet, one of the righteous.

[37:113]
And We blessed him and Isaac. And among their descendants is he who is virtuous, and he who plainly wrongs his soul.

[37:114]
And verily We favoured Moses and Aaron,

[37:115]
and We delivered them and their people from the great distress.

[37:116]
And We helped them so that they became the victors.

[37:117]
And We gave them the enlightening scripture.

[37:118]
And We guided them to the straight path,,

[37:119]
and We left for them among posterity:

[37:120]
‘Peace be to Moses and Aaron!’

[37:121]
So do We reward the virtuous.

[37:122]
Indeed both were among Our faithful servants.

[37:123]
And truly Elias was [also] one of the messengers.

[37:124]
When he said to his people, ‘Will you not fear [God]?

[37:125]
Do you call on Baal and abandon the Best of Creators,

[37:126]
God, your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers?’

[37:127]
But they denied him. So they will indeed be arraigned

[37:128]
— [all] except God’s delivered servants,

[37:129]
and We left for him among posterity:

[37:130]
‘Peace be to Elias!’

[37:131]
Indeed so do We reward the virtuous.

[37:132]
Truly he is one of Our faithful servants.

[37:133]
And indeed Lot was one of the messengers;

[37:134]
when We delivered him together with all his family,

[37:135]
except an old woman [who was] among those who stayed behind.

[37:136]
Then We destroyed [all] the others.

[37:137]
And indeed you pass by them, [both] in the morning,

[37:138]
and at night: will you not then understand?

[37:139]
And indeed Jonah was one of the messengers;

[37:140]
when he fled to the laden ship.

[37:141]
Then he drew lots and was of those rejected.

[37:142]
Then the whale swallowed him while he was blameworthy.

[37:143]
And had he not been one of those who glorify [God],

[37:144]
he would have tarried in its belly until the day when they are raised.

[37:145]
Then We cast him onto the barren land, and he was sick.

[37:146]
And We made a gourd plant to grow above him.

[37:147]
And We sent him to a [community of a] hundred thousand or more.

[37:148]
And they believed. So We gave them comfort for a while.

[37:149]
So ask them: Are daughters to be for your Lord, while sons are to be for them?

[37:150]
Or did We create the angels females while they were witnesses?

[37:151]
Lo! it is indeed out of their [own] mendacity that they say,

[37:152]
‘God has begotten’. And verily they are liars.

[37:153]
Has He preferred daughters to sons?

[37:154]
What is wrong with you? How do you judge?

[37:155]
Will you not then remember?

[37:156]
Or do you have a clear warrant?

[37:157]
Then produce your scripture, if you are being truthful.

[37:158]
And they have set up between Him and the jinn a kinship, while the jinn certainly know that they shall indeed be arraigned.

[37:159]
Glory be to God above what they attribute

[37:160]
— [all] except God’s devoted servants.

[37:161]
For indeed you and what you worship

[37:162]
— you cannot tempt thereto,

[37:163]
except him who will burn in Hell.

[37:164]
And there is not one of us, but has a known station.

[37:165]
And indeed it is we who are the rangers.

[37:166]
And indeed it is we who give glory.

[37:167]
And indeed they used to say,

[37:168]
‘If we had but a reminder from the ancients,

[37:169]
we would have surely been God’s devoted servants’.

[37:170]
Yet they disbelieved in it, but they will come to know.

[37:171]
And verily Our Word has gone beforehand in favour of Our servants, the messengers

[37:172]
— assuredly they shall be helped,

[37:173]
and assuredly Our hosts, they will indeed be the victors.

[37:174]
So leave them for a while

[37:175]
and watch them; for they will [soon] see.

[37:176]
Do they seek to hasten Our chastisement?

[37:177]
But when it descends in their courtyard, how awful will be the morning for those who were warned.

[37:178]
So leave them for a while,

[37:179]
and watch; for they will [soon] see.

[37:180]
Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Might, [exalted is He] above what they allege!

[37:181]
And peace be to the messengers.

[37:182]
And praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.
